Chemically straightening my hair??

so.. ive been doing some research on this and i really wanna do it now.. my hair is curly and frizzy and takes me about an hour to straighten it... would getting my hair chemically straightened be a good idea?? idkkkk....

Chemically straightening my hair??

No, i don't think so. I have the same problem with my hair. Just use some products that help straighten your hair faster, without any frizz. Besdies, curly hair is nice sometimes too, and you will miss it when it's gone. Chemically straightening it is bad for the hair.

Chemically straightening my hair??

It depends...if you plan on wearing your hair like that alot then yes go for it...i have had a perm since i was 2 yrs old.

Chemically straightening my hair??

If you straighten your hair everyday and never wear it curly, then yes. But if you wear it curly then no. If I was older I would do it to my hair, but my mom won't let me.

Chemically straightening my hair??

a hair stylist could look at your hair and tell you if it would work...

I've had it done before...Basically they put perm solution in your hair and comb it out...

Chemically straightening my hair??

it could work, but i have heard some people have chemical reactions to the chemicals and it ends up burning their hair and making it even worse. research it somemore..goodluck

Chemically straightening my hair??

This process is generally no more dangerous to your hair as regular perming, in fact, the same chemicals are generally used. It is the process that differs. But, having said that, it is not as long lasting as a perm as it shows your wavy regrowth in a more noticeable way than a straight regrowth, so if you continue the process, be careful on who you hire to do this, as only the root area should be done since it is done more often. Get some good advice from a reputable and reliable salon. But, think about a style to suit your wavy hair where you don't have to straighten it, again, get advice from your salon.

Chemically straightening my hair??

yes however if it is really curly u should opt for the relaxer instead of the straightener it will work better and your hair will stay straighter alot longer. However if you have used a perm on your hair at all you can not use the relaxer. also if you do the straightener and it does not work well you will not be able to use the relaxer after that.

Chemically straightening my hair??

You would have to keep getting chemical applications to straighten the new growth every couple of weeks though... but if you're at your wits end, go for it!

Chemically straightening my hair??

if you straighten it for a long time with time it will become straight...there are shampoos too which can help...

Chemically straightening my hair??

no chemicals your hair will look terrible

Chemically straightening my hair??

just get a REALLY good straightener! its way better then putting chemicals in ur hair!

Chemically straightening my hair??

Well I am an African American female who used to chemically straighten my hair and I decided over a year ago that I wanted to stop using such harsh chemicals. I am glad I did it most importantly so my hair will be less probable of falling out as I age and secondly so I can alternate the curly and straight look. I live in an area that can get pretty humid and moist during the summer, so that is when I wear it curly. During the colder months I straighten it with a straightening serum and a flat iron. If you really love your hair and want to keep it really healthy, I would suggest not doing so and just bear with that fact that it will take some time to straighten it.

Chemically straightening my hair??

i was enquiring at some point aswell

the regrowth would be funky, think about it, its not like a curly perm, which would have nice curles cascading away from the straight, but curly and then straight hair.... odd.

second, its a process that does NOT promise stick straight hair, depending on ure hair type and where u get it done, it might leave a few kinks that ud have to iron out in the morning, tho it WOULD def cut down on time it might not be wash and wear.

third, u need touchups, and its hard to grow out.

Fourth, ull have no volume, like zero. ure hair will be so so straight that it might not suite ure face, esp if ure used to seeing lots of boucy curls

i would say just learn to embrace ure curl. opt for a shorter cut that works with the curl- go to someone that its truly an expert on cutting curly hair. try to get it cut DRY if u can. use a curling creme and a hot oil treatment and NOT BRUSHING to tame ure curl a little, but the secret is in the cut, make sure it doesnt just hang on ure face funny, but instead frames it better.

good luck and hope that helped u out!

Chemically straightening my hair??

I think that would be good if you really wanted it done. especially because you said it takes an hour to straighten it.

Chemically straightening my hair??

Yes, but can be expensive and you will need to do touch ups. Because it will grow in curly. If you color you hair, or have had it colored at any time in the past or think you might in the future talk to you stylist honestly about it. She will be able to better decide what relaxer to use. Go to a professional. Relaxing is the hardest thing you can do to your hair and I wouldn't recommend doing at home. Especially for the 1st time.

Chemically straightening my hair??

That depends. Whatever you do, you don't want to get it cheaply done. The problem with hair is almost anywhere you go, what you pay for is what you get. The only chemical straightening that won't harm your hair is Japanese Thermal Straightening, but that can be very expensive - an average job is about $500 and a good job can be up to $1000. In general though, chemical straightening isn't a good idea for your hair.

Chemically straightening my hair??

if u really want to do it go for it, it is your hair and your money and it only matters what you think, but i think you should really think about it because they last for like 3 mo and if you wont really be able to wear your hair curly while you have it so if you like to do that maybe you should consider something else, but if you have your heart set on it i think you should do it, just take care of it afterwards with products for chemically treated hair so it doesnt get dry and even more frizzy and eventually break off....good luck!!!

Chemically straightening my hair??

i would recommend it. if you want straight hair. but you have to remember that you have to get the regrowth straightened every 2 months as it grows out too so this can be costly after awhile. also, go to someone that you can trust. if you sit down in someones chair and are not too sure about thier skill....don't do it. chemicals will mess your hair up so bad and quick if you get someone who doesn't really work with them or know about them. i will tell you that two heads are better than one, so if your stylist gets someone elses opinion that works there, then yyou know that you have a winner. great stylist talk to each other and want to make sure that they are making the right decision. some people take this as a sign that she doesn't know what she is doing....its a common misconception. the best advice i can give you is trust your gut when it comes time to. and you might want to try the japanese straightening over the relaxers. it makes the hair alot softer. most of these straighteners run abotu 300$ an hour. matrix makes one that is alot cheaper and just as good. i have used alot of products so i speak from experience. try places like the hair cuttery or someone that uses matrix color. hope this helps

Chemically straightening my hair??

I was reading through the pervious answers and its hilarious how some women dont know sh*t and still need to put in their two cents! I guess guys are right that we talk too much!

Listen, I have had it done 4 times already over 3-4 years. Which means I get it done about once a year. My hair looks great, if I may say so myself. Not as silky as it was the first time, but what do you expect? But still FAR from damaged. Everybody thinks I have naturally straight hair. Contrary to someone up there who didnt know what they were talking about, it IS pin straight. You pay over $250 for a reason. It makes managing hair SO easy, I had thick wavy/large curls kind of hair. But the top layer used to be frizzy which I hated and this is why I went for it.

Now I step out of the shower, dry for like a minute b/c I'm impatient and walk out, within half an hour it air dries perfectly straight. It cant get simpler than this.

I am such an advocate for the japanese staight perm b/c it has made my life so much easier. I plan to do it forever.

However, you should be ok with ALWAYS having your hair straight, if you like to change it up often this is not for you. I am ok with straight hair forever, most ppl are not.

As for volume, you will not have much the first couple of weeks, so if you have thick hair this perm is a better idea than if you have very thin hair. But eventually you will have normal volume, once your roots grow a little bit, and not the big frizzy kind. Not "zero volume" like the girl up there said.

ALSO if your hair is VERY curly, like tight curls, you should think about it. I am of Indian descent so my hair is wavy but the top grows in straight, which means that I can last a year with the perm. I just have to eventually start blow drying or staightening the top a bit before I go out. This still only takes a minute or 2 so it is fine with me. Its been 8 months now and since it is summer I have been wearing my hair slicked back in a ponytail b/c of the humidity. I dont want the top to frizz up. This still is fine with me, b/c its quick and simple, and still looks cute b/c the ponytail is nice and straight.

If I go out however, I would straight iron the top and leave it down.

Also, NO you do not have to get the roots retouched every 2 weeks or even every couple of months!!! These girls have no idea what they are talking about!! Please dont listen to them!!!! I try to go once/year to preserve the strength of my hair. But it's ok to go after 6 months too since they just retouch your hair. It is not recommended to go less than 6 months apart. As I said, it's up to you, the first few months it will look great, later it will start to grow and you can figure out other things to do, like tying it back, or just taking out a couple of minutes to quickly straighten the top as opposed to an hour to straighten it ALL. Doesnt that make more sense?? Also nothing is as cost effective as this perm, I used to spend $25/week to get it blow-dried at the salon, that is $1300/year!!! Now I spend $250/year and am so much happier. PLUS, the damage that blow dryers and straightening irons do to your hair---its SOOO bad for you. Once a year getting this perm is so much better for your hair.

So it depends on you now, you've got all the real facts from someone who actually knows. Good luck!

Chemically straightening my hair??

Omg. I'm SO glad you asked this question because I just went through the SAME EXACT thing!!!

Ok so let me fill you in on my hair naturally.

It poofy. frizzy. thick. curly. and something that I like to call "the wildebeast mane attached to my head"

sound familiar to you at all?

And yes, it would take me over an hour to straighten it, and blow dry etc, the whole shabang. you know how it is. It's ANNOYING! and worst of all it's soooo damaging to expose your hair to that much heat from the flat iron and hair dryer.

So this is why I decided to chemically straighten my hair. I was going to invest in buying a CHI flat iron because I've heard they are amazing and a CHI hair dryer. BUT my hair stylist said that its way too damaging for the hair.

Chemical straightening is about just as damaging as a perm. and Bleaching / coloring your hair is even more damaging than chemical straightening treatments. So when people respond to your question and tell you it will be too damaging...they don't understand that it's a LOT less damaging than if they went to go bleach their hair.

First thing you need to remember, please please PLEASE do NOT try to do it yourself at home. Trust me hun, if you are putting a chemical in your hair you do NOT want to be flubbing around yourself at home with it. Then you could REALLY damage your hair.

My recommendation: Go to a professional hair stylist who has had a lot of experience with straightening. I just called around to different salons in my area and asked if anyone there did straightening treatments and asked about how many years they've been doing it, the process, the costs etc.

It costs me about $300 to get it done. But it lasts for 6 months. This means that I basically wake up. Shower. Walk of the shower. Towel dry my hair and go. It dries perfectly silky smooth and straight. I don't have to do anything to it. Sometimes if it's cold out or i want it to be dry, i just quickly blow dry it. But i never need to use a flat iron. It's the best thing I've ever done to my hair. Also, you know how when your hair is curly you always have to use products like gel, hair spray, scrunching creams, etc?

You don't have to spend a whole bunch of money on hair products anymore. And the time you save is SO worth it. Once the hair starts to grow back in, you just use a cheap flat iron to style it until you get it re-done again after 6 months.

I LOVE it. You should seriously consider it. It's so much less drying for your hair and so much more convenient. Sounds like a lot to spend at one time but if you think about it...it lasts for 6 months!!

Also, just a side note as a tip: try using Aveda Smooth Infusion shampoo. Just to use in general. Because Aveda is a plant-based shampoo that does not contain sodium ingredients (like just about every other shampoo out there). Sodium strips your hair from moisture and proteins, so make sure you're using a plant-based shampoo like from Aveda because it will make your hair even more silky.

So I seriously recommend going for it. it's so worth it. Just remember....please please please remember!!! (i dont want you to damage your hair) DONT DO IT YOURSELF AT HOME!!!! Go to a professional salon and get it done. You're going to love it!!!

anymore questions about it you can ask me!

i love helping with hair advice.

=)

Chemically straightening my hair??

my mom did it and it worked great. i would go the the salon and get it done professionally. the chemical that most people use to straighten it is the same chemical they use to perm hair, it's just a different process. go for it, it will look great!

Chemically straightening my hair??

as a professional hair stylist with naturally curly and frizzy hair myself, i say go for it. just make sure that u go to someone who is specialized in doing this chemical service. going to someone that thinks they know how to apply this will just leave it in too long and that will cause breakage and damage.

i highly recommend that u get the relaxer, u'll love the results and u must keep up with ur hair. make sure that u cut ur ends after every single relaxer u get.

Chemically straightening my hair??

Yes it will be a good idea if you take care of it with regular conditioning and trims..... My hair is chemically straightened and I hate to toot my own horn but what the hell...it looks awesome (www.myspace.com/sexceekemee) It allows me to curn whenever I want, wear it straight whenever I want and do a bunch of other styles. I do the process about once every 3 months and it usually cost between $40 and $60 in New York depending on the length of your hair....

Chemically straightening my hair??

I have pin straight hair %26amp; don't recommend getting rid of your curls! I mean, I personally rather straighten my hair than curl it, but I don't have a choice.

But if you do choose to get it done, keep in mind that this procedure will damage your hair. If your hair is really healthy %26amp; in good condition right now, I wouldn't do it

Better safe than sorry!
