The expensive straightening iron I got seems to have permanently straightened my hair. Why?

I recently got one of those expensive, high heat straightening irons and used it on my hair on and off for about 2 weeks. When I stopped using it, (after washing my hair) I noticed that my hair is only half as curly as it used to be, and has a weird sulfur-y smell, especially when it's wet (the smell reminds me of what a 'perm' smells like.) It has been about 3 weeks without using it and my hair still hasn't returned to normal. My hair is naturally really curly, but also very fine and dry (it breaks easily and is fairly fragile, for curly hair).

Is it possible that the texture of my hair was permanently altered by using the iron? Could it have something to do with styling products (only smoothing hair serum) or the pH of my hair? I miss my hair so much, and the smell is driving me and my boyfriend crazy!

My guess would be that the high heat dried your hair out, and took away a lot of it's natural moisture; which is why your hair texture may have changed. In the Summer, when it's humid out, your hair frizzes and curls up more than it normally does; this happens because of the moisture in the air...take the moisture away and it will have the opposite effect.

You should try using deep conditioning treatments a few times a week, such as a hair mask or a hot oil treatment (VO5). If that doesn't work, you may just have to wait until your hair grows out to get your curly hair back; it didn't permanently change your hair texture though, your hair will grow back as it was before as long as you don't continue using the iron.

As for the smell... that is very weird. Maybe you should try switching up your shampoo and conditioner, it may be a reaction from one of the chemicals in your hair products, ESPECIALLY the hair serum - you should stop using that for awhile to see if the smell goes away. Styling products build-up and don't entirely shampoo out unless you use a clarifying shampoo.

honey you need to go to a hair salon not ask a question like that on here cause your hair is definitely ruined especially if it smells like that

Straightening your hair is not very healthy for it. (No offense, I straighten my hair a lot) You are actually burning it when you straighten it, and depending on your hair, a lot of weird things can happen. It could not have permanently altered your hair, though. Maybe your hair is getting naturally straighter. You can find out by seeing how it is when it grows out more.

The more expensive models get so hot that it is possible that you have burned the curl out of your hair, which means you have damaged your hair to the point it will no longer hold it's natural curl. Once the hair is damaged to that point, trying to get the dead , damaged hair back to it's original curl, usually, takes nothing short of a miracle. Protien treatments and reconstructors will help, but if it so damaged it will not hold a curl, the only way to fix it is by cutting a great deal of the damage off. If it was frail to begin with, the heat most likely did you in. Most models top off at around 400 degrees, which for fine hair, is WAY too excessive!

Once damaged or burned, your best bet is to get the damaged hair off and start over! Sorry!!!

thats really strange. i would go to a salon and call the company and ask wht went wrong and about the smell... a straightener alone wouldnt do it. i have straightened my hair everyday for over 10 years and my hair is just as curly...with TONS of different straighteners. both expensive and not

feel bad for you deary but i think you've badly damaged your hair by using the iron too often.. if it always smells like somethings burning then i think you have to have your hair treated in a salon.. or maybe you can use kerastase nutritive gluco-active as an immediate remedy.. i would also suggest you don't skip anyday without using a conditioner, just to partially repair your hair.. wishin you all the luck!
